Storm Damage and Weather Claims: Is your Holiday Lodge Covered?
“Is your holiday lodge covered for storm damage and weather claims?” is a question that tends to feel rather theoretical until the forecast starts showing yellow warnings and the trees outside begin moving in ways trees really should not.
The reassuring answer is that storm damage is included within standard Park Home Assist holiday lodge insurance cover. The important second half of the answer is that insurance is designed for sudden, unexpected damage. It is not a substitute for routine maintenance, and the circumstances of each claim still matter.
What counts as storm damage?
A storm can leave fairly obvious evidence: lifted roof sections, damaged cladding, broken external fittings or water entering after part of the structure has been damaged by high winds. Heavy rain can also expose a weakness that was previously unnoticed.
This is where cause becomes important. If sound roofing is damaged by a severe weather event and water gets in as a direct result, that is very different from rain finding its way through a roof that has been deteriorating for months. General wear and tear, poor maintenance and gradual deterioration are not what a storm policy is intended to cover.
A quick weather-claim sense check
- Was the damage sudden and linked to a specific period of bad weather?
- Can you see a clear point of damage, such as a lifted panel, broken fitting or damaged roof area?
- Is there evidence that the lodge was in reasonable condition beforehand?
- Have you taken photographs before anything is moved or repaired?
- Does your policy schedule include any relevant conditions, exclusions or excesses?
Storm and flood are not quite the same thing
It is easy to use “storm damage” as a catch-all for anything involving wind and water, but insurance policies usually distinguish between different causes. Park Home Assist holiday lodge insurance cover includes loss or damage caused by storm, while flood cover may depend on the policy and location.
If your lodge is on located on a holiday park with a history of flooding, it is especially worth checking the schedule rather than assuming that every kind of water damage sits under the same heading. A few minutes spent reading the policy before winter can be more useful than trying to interpret it while standing in wet socks.
What about things outside the lodge?
Decking, sheds, garden furniture, hot tubs and other additions can all complicate a weather claim because they may have separate limits, conditions or exclusions. If you have added something substantial since arranging your insurance, inform your insurance company and check that your cover still reflects what is actually on the plot.
The concrete base beneath a holiday lodge is also normally the park owner’s responsibility rather than part of your own holiday lodge insurance, so damage involving the base may need to be handled differently.
If a storm has already done the damage
Your first priority is safety. Once conditions have settled, if possible, take clear photographs from several angles and make a simple note of what you have found. If temporary work is needed to stop the damage becoming worse, keep receipts and, where possible, avoid permanent repairs until the claim has been discussed.
Park Home Assist asks customers to report incidents that could lead to a claim as soon as practicable. Claims are handled over the phone, so you do not need to begin by wrestling with a long form.
A little preparation can help
Before a spell of bad weather, it may be worth checking gutters, visible roof edges, external panels and anything loose around your holiday lodge. Outdoor furniture can be moved or secured and any existing defect is better dealt with before the wind finds it.
This is not about trying to make your lodge completely storm-proof. Very little is. It is simply about keeping ordinary maintenance separate from genuinely unexpected damage, which can make a future claim much clearer.
