Protecting Your Park Home From Storms
Protecting your park home from storms is about more than just battening things down — it’s about safeguarding your property, your possessions, and your peace of mind. In a severe storm, the risks can include wind-driven rain, flying debris, uplift of roofing, and damage to windows or cladding. Taking preventative and responsive actions can reduce damage and speed up recovery.
When you are proactive in preparing for adverse weather, you can usually significantly reduce the chances of damage. The following steps are included here to help you protect your park home and know what to do after a storm passes.
- Secure loose fittings, furniture, and accessories
Loose items like garden chairs, pots, parasols or storage boxes can become dangerous in high winds. Anchor heavy items or store them inside. Detach or securely fasten aerials, satellite dishes, and external lighting fixtures wherever possible.
- Roof, gutter and drainage checks
Inspect roofing for loose or damaged tiles, gaps around flashings, or cracked sealant before storms arrive. Ensure gutters, downpipes and drains are clear so rainwater can flow freely away from your home. Blocked gutters can lead to water ingress — one of the most common and costly issues caused by storm damage. Water seeping behind walls or under cladding can result in damp, mould and long-term structural decay.
- Trim trees and remove high-risk branches
Cut back branches that overhang your roof, walls or windows. Dead or weak limbs can snap in high winds and cause structural harm or break windows.
- Inspect seals around windows, doors and external joints
Over time, sealants can shrink or crack, allowing rain to penetrate. Replace or top up exterior-grade silicone sealants or weatherstripping as needed to keep your home watertight.
- Strengthen decking, skirting, canopies and external structures
Check that posts, railings, panels and skirting are securely fixed. Use galvanised or corrosion-resistant fixings and reinforce weak or exposed structures before winter.
- After the storm: inspect and document damage
Always put your safety first. Only inspect your property once winds have completely died down and it’s safe to do so. Avoid standing water, damaged power lines or unstable surfaces.
Walk around your home carefully and look for: cracks, displaced tiles, lifted cladding, loose panels, water stains or damp patches. Take clear photographs of any damage from several angles and make written notes — this evidence is extremely useful if you need to make a claim on your park home insurance. - Be alert to water ingress and hidden damage
Water may enter unseen areas such as under floors or within wall cavities, leading to rot, mould or electrical faults. Early detection and drying are essential to prevent long-term deterioration.
- Prioritise safety and call professionals if you’re unsure
Do not attempt to climb onto roofs or carry out dangerous repairs yourself. Contact qualified professionals for structural or electrical issues. If you’re uncertain whether repairs are safe or covered, speak to your insurer.
