Why it’s Important to Insure Your Jet Ski All Year Round

Why it’s important to insure your jet ski all year round is easier to understand when you remember that the risks do not disappear when the engine is switched off.

A jet ski may spend only part of the year on the water, but for the rest of the time it still has to be stored, transported, maintained and protected. Winter can feel like the quiet season, yet the craft itself has not stopped being valuable simply because you are not riding it.

  1. The off-season is still part of ownership

Once the warmer weather ends, your jet ski may be on a trailer, in a storage unit, at a boat club or kept at a holiday home. Each arrangement brings a different set of practical risks. Theft and attempted theft can happen while a craft is ashore, while accidental or malicious damage is not limited to days when you are using it.

Assist Insurance Services can cover jet skis at a wide range of storage locations, including boat clubs, storage units, holiday homes and some versa docks or hydro pods, subject to acceptance and the policy terms. If your storage arrangements change during the year, it is worth checking that your insurer knows.

  1. Your jet ski may still be on the move

A jet ski often travels almost as much as it rides. It may need to be taken home after the season, moved into storage, collected for servicing or transported somewhere new for the next outing.

Insurance cover for jet skis in transit is included among the standard benefits offered by Assist Insurance Services. Trailer and trolley cover is also available as an additional option. That can be particularly relevant if your craft spends months ashore but still makes several journeys during that time.

  1. There is more than one way to insure your jet ski

Year-round cover does not mean that every owner needs exactly the same policy. Assist offers three broad choices: Jet ski and liability cover, jet ski only and third party liability cover only.

Jet ski and liability cover protects the craft and includes public liability. Jet ski only covers damage to the craft and may suit someone keeping it permanently ashore or refurbishing it ashore. Third party liability cover only excludes damage to the jet ski itself but provides liability cover. That flexibility is useful because the insurance cover can reflect what you actually do with the craft rather than treating every owner in the same way.

  1. Remember liability when you return to the water

Jet ski insurance is not a legal requirement in the UK, but it is important to point out that third-party insurance is compulsory at most marinas, harbours and recognised mooring or launching areas. Leaving insurance until the first sunny weekend of the year can therefore create an unnecessary risk.

The jet ski and liability option includes up to £3 million third-party liability as standard, while we also offer flexible liability-only cover. If you water-ski or tow toys, additional liability options are available and should be discussed when arranging the policy.

  1. Think about the value sitting in storage

A well looked-after jet ski can represent a substantial investment. Our standard benefits include theft or attempted theft, accidental and/or malicious damage, personal accident cover up to £20,000 and salvage, towage and assistance charges, depending on the cover selected and subject to the policy wording.

The quiet months can also be a good time to review the declared value of the craft, how it is secured and whether you have changed trailer, storage site or regular drivers. Small changes can matter to an insurer, so keeping the policy information up to date is part of keeping the cover valid.

  1. Peace of mind should not be seasonal

Having the right insurance for your jet ski in place all year can bring peace of mind because you are not trying to predict the only weeks when something might go wrong. Assist Insurance Services has more than 20 years’ experience in the leisure sector and its specialist advisers can tailor jet ski cover around the craft, how you use it and where you keep it.

Then, when the weather is right, there is one less thing to organise before you head for the water. You can concentrate on the weather forecast, the launch and remembering where you put the kill cord.

Please note that all insurance cover is subject to acceptance of terms and conditions.
