Does Your Static Caravan Insurance Policy Cover Awnings, Accessories and Personal Belongings?

Does your static caravan insurance policy cover awnings, accessories and personal belongings? It is a useful question, because a static caravan policy does not automatically wrap everything on your pitch into one category. The caravan, fixed items, contents and outdoor equipment can all be treated differently. Therefore knowing where you stand with your insurance cover on each item may prevent an unwelcome gap in your policy appearing at claim time.

  1. Start with the caravan itself

Buildings or caravan cover is usually the starting point. At Park Home Assist, static caravan insurance can provide buildings cover up to £150,000, with protection against risks including fire, theft, storm, flood and vandalism, subject to the policy terms. New-for-old cover is available as an option for static caravans less than 20 years old.

It is also worth thinking beyond the walls and roof. Permanently installed items may form part of the insured property, while others sit under contents cover or need a separate option. If you have added a hot tub, satellite equipment or other features, tell your insurer and check how they are treated.

  1. What about awnings?

Awnings deserve a question of their own. They can be valuable and are more exposed to weather than the caravan itself, so it is easy to assume they are automatically protected in the same way. That is not always the case.

Under the current leisure home policy wording used for Park Home Assist static caravan cover, storm or flood damage to canopies and awnings is excluded under the buildings section. That makes the detail important: if an awning matters to you, ask exactly what cover applies to it and under which circumstances. The static caravan policy schedule is a better guide than assuming that anything attached to the caravan is automatically insured.

  1. Accessories can mean several different things

“Accessories” is a broad word. Some items may be part of the caravan, some may count as contents and others may fall outside standard cover. Park Home Assist includes features such as insurance cover for permanently installed hot tubs, garden furniture, freezer contents and contents kept within an outbuilding, subject to limits and policy conditions.

You can also add insurance for pedal cycles and sports equipment. If you keep outdoor furniture, bikes or other leisure items at the caravan, a quick list can help you check each type rather than relying on the word “contents” to do all the work.

  1. Are your personal belongings included in your static caravan insurance?

Contents cover is available up to £25,000 with Park Home Assist, but personal belongings still need a little thought. Policy definitions can exclude particular categories or set limits for single items, so a laptop, phone, jewellery or specialist equipment should not automatically be treated in the same way as ordinary household contents.

You may already insure some belongings elsewhere, perhaps under a home policy. If so, check which policy is intended to cover these. For anything expensive or unusual, asking before is easier than untangling the position after a loss.

  1. Look at how you actually use your caravan

The right insurance cover depends partly on your own habits. A caravan used only by you may have different needs from one you let to paying guests. Park Home Assist offers optional accidental damage and malicious damage cover when let, alongside other choices that allow you to tailor the policy more closely to the way the caravan is used.

The most useful approach is therefore to think in real objects rather than insurance labels: the awning, the bikes, the garden chairs, the television, the contents of the cupboards and the things you bring from home. Then ask where each of them sits within the policy.

  1. A little clarity can bring a lot of reassurance

Good insurance is about peace of mind, and that comes from knowing what you have chosen to cover, rather than simply hoping everything is included. Our award-winning team can talk through the details with you, explain the options and help you choose the insurance cover that fits your static caravan and the way you use it.

Once that is done, you can get back to the more enjoyable questions, such as whether the awning needs another chair under it, what to cook on the barbecue and why there are never quite enough pegs.

Please note that all insurance cover is subject to acceptance of terms and conditions.
